Behold the auto correction robot: AutoRaja!

—devadutta @ October 12, 2010

We have some really exciting news! We have successfully deployed a robot called “AutoRaja” on our servers which automatically moderates questions at the end of 3 days, assigns points and posts the answer!

AutoRaja uses a very sophisticated fuzzy search method to detect correct answers and assign points! (It is based on the Bitap algorithm, no less!)

Thanks to AutoRaja, from now on,

  • Scores will be up to date
  • Medals will be assigned on time and
  • Most importantly, answers come out automatically, so you dont have to wait!

Like all robots, AutoRaja can not yet replace humans, so we will review points assigned manually too. Until we do the review, you can see a note left by AutoRaja stating that the post was modded by it and not by humans. So, in case there is a discrepancy in scores, you know why.

Let us know what you think!

Also, we can make this project open source, if we get at least 50 comments on this post asking us to do it. Cleaning up code to release level is hard work :)

We lost a few comments

—devadutta @ September 20, 2010

Ladies and Gents,

Due to a database error and disjoint backup images, we have lost a few comments on questions posted over the past few days.
If you notice your answer is missing, please re-post it.

Update: We have opened comments on all questions posted in the last 15 75 (thats seventy five :) ) days

Update 2: Just because we have opened comments on 75 questions, it does not mean we have lost comments on all of them. We have lost a few comments posted in the range of 15-17th Sep.

We have a very super extra complicated way to check if your comment is indeed missing, but we will not do that. We will just trust you and give points :)

The 300 Man

—devadutta @ August 23, 2010

A big round of applause to Rogi** **for recording an unbeaten run-length of 300! Just Amazing! Keep it up!

In other updates, we were looking through the usage stats of bbPlay and looks like a lot of you like it! So we were thrilled and we have refreshed bbPlay with some major bug-fixes and added a few nice new features. Go ahead and click on the Play! button and you will notice

  1. You can now reach the post from inside bbPlay by clicking on the title
  2. Images are un-clickable. This was a major pain, sorry about having that bug there in the first place :)

The exciting new feature we have is that now you can tell us if you like a question by pressing **“l” ( l for like ) **within bbPlay and your vote will be registered. We will be displaying how many people liked a question and other stats shortly. Until then, you can just vote :)

Go ahead, Play and hit “l” to see for yourself :)

3s

—srikanth @ August 13, 2010

Greetings, intrepid quizzers!

In case you’ve noticed, the last couple of questions seemed to have something to do with 3s. This is, of course, all part of our grand masterplan, and that was foreshadowing for something quite important (to us, and hopefully you as well :)).Before we get straight to the point, one further clue: http://www.boiledbeans.net/2007/08/13/beginnings/

And in case you still haven’t figured it out, the link is that it’s been three years since Boiledbeans started!

It’s been three years of:

  1. Drama! Intrigue! Geekiness!
  2. Frantic Googling/wiki-ing
  3. Coding in weird features
  4. Fixing bugs in those weird features
  5. Replying to email
  6. Scrambling to post questions

And, in short, three years of absolute fun for us. We hope you enjoyed it as well :-)

(Of course, we have something special coming up soon to mark this occasion. Watch this space. )

Happy birthday!

—srikanth @ July 15, 2010

It’s everyone’s favourite quizmaster’s birthday today.

Happy birthday Mr. Devadutta!

PS: be sure to refresh boiledbeans today :-) Ctrl-F5 for you Firefox users.

Thanks a lot for the wishes people! I wanted to give out free points to all those who wished me, but Srikanth said no :)

Browse with ease

—devadutta @ June 20, 2010

Browsing through old questions on bb is now as easy as it can get. bbplay is now fully integrated with the site and you can click on the Play buttons you see on each post to start browsing old questions from that day!

Example usage:

  • Browse through questions from August 2009?

  • Click on August 2009 link on the right

  • Click Play on the first post

The random question version can be reached by clicking on the play button on the right side bar.

Keyboard shortcuts on Play:

j: Next question (previous question chronologically)
k: Prev question
a: Show answer

Known issues:

  1. If you click play on non-quiz posts, like this one, Play starts in random mode
  2. The first 3 questions fetched are in unpredictable order. (I need to put a semaphore to sync the Asynchronous bird seed company - AJAX.)
  3. Keyboard shortcuts do not work on IE. From stats, we know most of our users use FF or Chrome. So its not a big problem.

As promised, the source will be made available under a free software license soon.

P.S: Apologies about the badly written post. 2 AM it is.

10^3 Days Later

—devadutta @ May 17, 2010

Yesterday, ladies and gents, Boiledbeans turned 103 days old! and obviously, we are very happy!
I mean, for two guys who never turned in assignments on time or attended classes on schedule, posting a thousand (more, actually) questions without fail is very astounding.

So, to celebrate, 2 things

  1. Boiledbeans Play!

bbPlay is a new, fast and lightweight way to browse old questions posted on bb. Browsing questions in a blog format is hard. bbPlay attempts to solve this!

Right now, bbPlay displays questions in random order. Use it and let us know if you like it, we are planning to integrate it deeper into bb.
Usage: Press ‘j’ ‘k’ for next and previous. ‘a’ for magic! IE users: click on the green div for next, red for prev and white for magic :)
The awesome thing about bbPlay is that it will be open sourced! (I need to clean up code, will be done by the weekend)
2. Free T-Shirts
What would Boiledbeans be without its awesome users? Not much.
Srikanth and I thank every single one of you for your awesomeness! and to show a little gratitude, we are giving out Boiledbeans t-shirts to the first 50 users who put a comment on this post!
So hurry up! Tell us what you like about bb, send us screenshots of bb running on random devices or just say ‘hello world’. If you are one of the first 50, you get it. If you are not in the first 50, you may still get a shirt if we like your comment :)
So, make it quick, make it special!
We have a bunch of other special things planned, more details on that later.

Captcha gone for registered users

—devadutta @ April 4, 2010

We have put in an experimental hack that removes the captcha which appears on the comments form. This works only if you have logged in.

Since this thing is experimental, please let us know if you see any problems while posting comments (logged in or otherwise)

We trust this hack and have tested it thoroughly, so it should work without any problems. But, you can send in answers to [email protected] in the worst case.
