Microsoft terminated support for Halo 2 multiplayer on XBOX live, but there was a caveat: the service would stay on as long as people were still online. A few diehard fans tried to prolong its life by never logging out. APACHE N4SIR was the last one to log off, effectively ending Halo 2 multiplayer via XBL. In the process he kept it alive for almost a month past its final termination date.

Plain-text question:

Something happened in 2012 that caused, at the very least, these sites to go down. It is very likely there were far more failures than this, so I will not claim this list to be exhaustive in any way:

  • Reddit
  • Mozilla
  • Foursquare
  • Yelp
  • Gawker
  • Linkedin
  • Stumbleupon

What caused the outage?

The gurus running the central NTP servers added a leap second in 2012. This triggered a couple of obscure bugs that brought down many services en-masse, leading to all these sites going down :)
