Was this question first asked by devadutta?

—srikanth @ September 21, 2011

The Univ. of Chicago statistics prof (1) came up with this ’law’ applicable to the world of science. Keeping in accordance with the law itself, he did two things:

  • He said that he was definitely not the first one to come up with this law. He just named it after himself.
  • He said that it was, in fact, (2), an american sociologist, who actually came up with it.

The law itself is very ‘meta’ in nature. All the more so because it has been ‘proven’ right by so many self references.

OK, enough meta. Question is simple: Name the law!

Stigler’s law, proposed by Stephen Stigler, states that “no scientific discovery is named after its original discoverer” and has many corollaries. The wikipedia article is quite interesting :)

...and the rest, as they say, is history - part 2

The name D is, keeping in tune with the recursive nature of things, a reference to a feature of D itself - message passing. Message passing was by no means something invented by C or in D. It was from an older language E, created in Oslo.

E is considered the first true language that implemented the concept “F”. F is one of the most commonly used paradigms today, having outlasted/outpopularized almost every other paradigm. Interestingly enough, the first thoughts of F came up in the development of A!

Having completed that loop - the question is simple. Identify D through **F **for 1 point.

Laaate post is not that late ;) Almost made it on time.

...and the rest, as they say, is history - part 1

—srikanth @ September 19, 2011

Loooong question with much editorializing shall ensue:

A was invented by B at MIT in 1958. One interesting, almost core, feature of A, is its intensely recursive nature. This recursion was to such an extreme that a complete interpreter for A was written in A in “about a page” of code!

Fast forward to 1972. The setting is, of course, Xerox PARC. C and ‘Dan’ were in discussion about powerful programming languages. C, inspired by the one-page nature of A, claimed that he could define the “most powerful language in the world” in a page of code. ‘Dan’ bet him on it, and C eventually did come up with the language D.

Laaate post is continued in the next one.

Identify A, B and C for 1 point.
