1 wrote a very carefully crafted and complicated piece of software and released it in late 80s, which made him hugely infamous. His release was one of the first instances of this kind of software. Although he got into decent trouble for this release, he came out of it and he now teaches in a very distinguished univ. He is more or less worshiped in geek circles for his skills. Enough of background info, now for the question

TR 6
Sony’s “Transistor” series of radios made the word “Transistor” synonymous with radio. Apparently, when Sony came up with the company name, they wanted a word “not existing in any language”. They have apparently even won law-suites which claimed the word existed in some language.
If anyone here is feeling litigious, Sony (Soni) is surely a Punjabi word :)

(1) and (2) developed an algorithm, that (3) later optimized and patented. (3)’s patent was granted in the name of Sperry Corporation (that later, through a series of unfortunate events, became Unisys). The company X, unaware of the patent, chose this technique to implement their famous format Y.
X, however, went nuts and decided to require everyone who used Y to pay them (and Unisys) money for using their format. This caused much IT industry uproar and melodrama that went against X and, some believe, eventually lead to X’s downfall.
Now, identify 1, 2, 3 and name the company X and the format Y.
