This scientist (1) proposed a novel propulsion system (2) (for spacecraft covering interstellar distances). This eventually turned out to be infeasible, but it was still an extremely interesting concept. It captured the imagination of the sci-fi community, which picked it up immediately. It soon became a staple of Big sci-fi. For example, the author in (3) made use of these propulsion systems extensively in his books.

1 wrote a very carefully crafted and complicated piece of software and released it in late 80s, which made him hugely infamous. His release was one of the first instances of this kind of software. Although he got into decent trouble for this release, he came out of it and he now teaches in a very distinguished univ. He is more or less worshiped in geek circles for his skills.
