—devadutta @ 09:42

This scientist (1) proposed a novel propulsion system (2) (for spacecraft covering interstellar distances). This eventually turned out to be infeasible, but it was still an extremely interesting concept. It captured the imagination of the sci-fi community, which picked it up immediately. It soon became a staple of Big sci-fi. For example, the author in (3) made use of these propulsion systems extensively in his books.

Identify 1, 2 and 3 :-)

Not the kind found in a fruit

—devadutta @ 13:06

1 wrote a very carefully crafted and complicated piece of software and released it in late 80s, which made him hugely infamous. His release was one of the first instances of this kind of software. Although he got into decent trouble for this release, he came out of it and he now teaches in a very distinguished univ. He is more or less worshiped in geek circles for his skills. Enough of background info, now for the question

Lightyear Stone

—devadutta @ 17:18

We have hit a lightyear-stone on BB(a mile is too small a distance at the speed of BB ;) ).

We now have a 100 registered users!
Congrats and welcome to our 100th registered user alakh_niranjan

And also,

duriel has set a new run-length record. He has got 31 cracks in a row, breaking the earlier 28 point record set by sidsen. And the best part is, he is still going strong and showing no signs of breaking it!

jayanth and prasanth (score shows 99, but we have to migrate 1 point from his old user name :) ) have scored 100 points!

Good work guys!

Sounds punjabi

—devadutta @ 09:47

2 was one of the first and most successful products of the company co-founded by the dude in 1.

Identify 1 and 2

  1. 199c72ddbcae31bb3f4f7bf2995a6f8b.gif 2. 3d3d006fdabee1922bde33f163e0fa8b.jpg

Although many did not identify 2 properly, anyone who got 1 has been given points. Namely: nishansolo , varuns88 , duriel , Dibyo , Ranjana Ninan , Shreyas , quantumfoammakesmeroamakhi , shivathilak , shenoyvarun86 , RajT , udupendra , bobo , Tathagata Chatterjee , prasanth , jayanth and shashank.

  1. Masaru Ibuka, co-founder of Sony Corp

  2. TR 6

Sony’s “Transistor” series of radios made the word “Transistor” synonymous with radio. Apparently, when Sony came up with the company name, they wanted a word “not existing in any language”. They have apparently even won law-suites which claimed the word existed in some language.

If anyone here is feeling litigious, Sony (Soni) is surely a Punjabi word :)
