In a petri dish – this looks like a streaked bacterial colonies. One of them is GFP, others some other fluorescent bacteria.

This is art in a petri dish – with agar, bacteria/virus and some staining agent.

Its a painting using live bacteria.

Straight from wikipedia: A San Diego beach scene drawn with an eight color palette of bacterial colonies expressing fluorescent proteins derived from GFP and the red-fluorescent coral protein dsRed. The colors include BFP, mTFP1, Emerald, Citrine, mOrange, mApple, mCherry and mGrape.

  8. Painting of a beach by Roger Tsien’s lab.

The diversity of genetic mutations is illustrated by this San Diego beach scene drawn with living bacteria expressing 8 different colors of fluorescent proteins.
