Murray Gell-Mann coined the word quark referring to verses in the novel Finnegans Wake, which read: “Three quarks for Muster Mark “. But, Richard Feynman had proposed “Parton” alluding to Dolly Parton , the country singer.

  1. Murray Gell-Mann named the quark model after some text in the book Finnegans Wake, while Richard Feynman who worked with MGM on the quark model wanted to name it after Dolly Parton

Murray Gell-Mann named quarks after characters from James Joyce’s unreadable novel Finnegan’s Wake. Richard Feynman wanted to call them Partons after Dolly Parton.

Feynman wanted to name them Partons after Dolly. Thankfully, Murray won out.

Feynman (2) wanted to name quarks after Dolly Parton (4), but Gell-Mann (1) named them from a passage in Finnegan’s Wake.

Quarks were originally going to be named “partons” after singer Dolly Parton, but Mr. Murray Gell-Mann changed his mind and went with quarks after seeing the word in Finnegans wake. while feynmann developed the Parton model which was similar to the quark model

Guessing the book is Strange Beauty, the biography of Murray Gill Mann. The rumour is about the naming of Quark particles based on characters from book Finnigans Wake and Dolly Partons. I guess quarks is the reason the clue is as it is…:P

That Feynman called them as Partons(after Dolly Parton) and Gell-Mann wanted to name them as Quarks after coming across that word in Finnegan Wake.

Feynman named the particle the parton, after Dolly Parton. American Nobel laureate Murray Gell-Mann named his discovery the quark, after the sound seagulls make as told in Finnegans wake

Murray Gell Mann named quarks after characters in Finnegans Waks by James Joyce. Richard Feynman wanted to name them partons after Dolly Parton.

  12. that feynman named quarks after parton as partons instead gell-mann wanted them named after a character in joyce’s book

Rumor is: Feynman named the parton model after Dolly Parton. Partons are the same as quarks, the preferred name of Murray Gell-Mann

Gell-mann coined ‘quark’, and Feynman called (basically) the same particle ‘parton’.

Contrary to rumour, Feynman did NOT have Dolly Parton in mind when naming the particle.
