Apple and Samsung are suing each other over iPad/Galaxy similarities, which Apple claims descend from the ones in 2001 (the movie).

“In one of the more interesting turn of events in the ongoing Apple versus Samsung patent infringement battle, Samsung’s defense team has introduced what they consider prior art that could have been used to inspire the design of the iPad. That prior art in question comes from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi film “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Samsung counters Apple’s claim that they stole the iPad design by citing iPad-like device in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Your captchas are getting too complicated. I might need a computer to help me figure out what they say.

Samsung used the tablets from 2011 Space Odyssey as example of prior art as defense in the design patent lawsuit Apple filed. Apple claimed that the Samsung Galaxy Tab is infringing on their iPad design patent. Samsung claimed that 2011: Space Odyssey already had an example of prior art that was visually similar to the iPad, and of course, preceded its creation.

The tablets(form factor) were displayed briefly in a movie 2001: a space odyssey (released in 1968). Samsung is using this footage as prior art to invalidate Apple’s design patent on tablet.

Samsung opposed Apple’s copyright infringement cases by claiming that scenes from 2001:A Space Odyssey served as prior art for an iPad-style tablet.

  25. Aditya S

2001: A Space Odyssey was cited by Samsung in a patent issue case against Apple. They said that the iPad design had already been envisioned in the movie (as seen on the screenshot) and was not an original design by Apple, thus making their patent an invalid issue.

  26. jinz

Samsung defended the case that its new line of tablets resembled the Apple ipad because they were both based on the tablet computers seen in the given image from ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’.

Samsung says couldn’t possibly have stolen the iPad’s design, because Apple took it from the imaginary science fiction movie space station. :)

Samsung vs Apple intellectual property right case where Samsung alleges that the basic idea of a tablet was envisioned in movies like 2001:A space Odyssey. The first pic is a still from that

Samsung in their on-going patent dispute with Apple suggested that Apple borrowed the concept of the iPad’s design from Stanley Kubrick’s classic science fiction film “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
