Here is a picture of John Preskill waving the baseball encyclopedia over his head, which he won after Stephen Hawking gave his talk arguing that information is not lost in black holes.

Stephen Hawking in front of a copy of the bet he and Kip Thorne made against John Preskill: they bet that information was lost in black holes.

    Preskill won.

Stephen Hawking admitting defeat in a long-standing bet with Caltech astrophysicist John Preskill.
This is about Blackholes not allowing any information to come out. Apparently, all that is false now.

(The joke is that an encyclopedia, unlike a black hole, yields information easily)

Here is a better picture from the event, detailing the bet.

    Thorne-Hawking-Preskill bet.
John Preskill showing off the baseball book that he won after Hawking conceded the bet. Preskill said information will be lost in a black hole, Hawking argued otherwise.

The Hawking U-turn about black holes made him lose the bet and John Preskill won a book on Total Baseball.

Stephen Hawking at International Conference of General Relativity and Gravitation conceded to Caltech astrophysicist John Preskill. They bet an encyclopedia over whether people could use black holes to travel to other universe. Black holes, hawking said, do not forever annihilate all traces of what falls into them.

“The joke is that an encyclopedia, unlike a black hole, yields information easily. Hawking offered one on cricket, but Preskill held out for Total Baseball: The Ultimate Baseball Encyclopedia, which had to be flown in.”

picture of Stephen Hawking in front of a copy of the bet he and Kip Thorne made against John Preskill: they bet that information was lost in black holes. The prize was an encyclopedia. If you look carefully you can see the words “the loser(s) will reward the winner(s) with an encyclopedia of the winner(s) choice, from which information can be recovered at will”.

The Thorne–Hawking–Preskill bet refers to a public bet on the outcome of the black hole information paradox made in 1997 by physics theorists Kip Thorne, Stephen Hawking and John Preskill.

In 2004, Hawking announced that he was conceding the bet, and that he now believed that black hole horizons should fluctuate and leak information, in doing so providing Preskill with a copy of Total Baseball, The Ultimate Baseball Encyclopedia.

For years, Stephen Hawking argued that the extreme gravitational fields of black holes somehow overturned the quantum laws. Now, he has dropped this idea.

The U-turn cost Professor Hawking a reference book called Total Baseball. He and Kip Thorne made a bet on the subject with an opponent of the idea, John Preskill, also of Caltech.

Stephen Hawking and the physicist John Preskill made a famous bet about this puzzle in 1997. Hawking bet that information wasn’t conserved; Preskill bet it was.

In 2004 Hawking conceded the bet to Preskill and Preskill won the baseball encyclopedia :)
