Answer:
Nim Chimpsky, named as a pun on Noam Chomsky, was a chimp raised in a laboratory environment. Scientists were attempting to disprove Chomsky’s theory that humans were “wired” for language by trying to teach Nim how to speak.

Nim Chimpsky was named for Noam Chomsky. Language studies, Chomsky’s theory on the same (that only humans are ‘wired’ for it) etc.

Nim Chimpsky (November 19, 1973 – March 10, 2000) was a chimpanzee who was the subject of an extended study of animal language acquisition (codenamed 6.001) at Columbia University, led by Herbert S. Terrace.

Chimpsky was given his name as a pun on Noam Chomsky, the foremost theorist of human language structure and generative grammar at the time, who held that humans were “wired” to develop language.

  10. Nakul

Nim Chimpsky and Noam Chomsky, who is the inspiration for the former. This comes about as he was the leading exponent on Human Language abilities, when the project started.

A movie called Project Nim looks at the life of a Nim Chimpsky, a chimp that was raised as a human child as part of a controversial experiment in the 1970s.

Pic 2 is of course Noam Chomsky.

Nim Chimpsky – a chimp that was the subject of an experiment to try and see if apes can be taught language. Chompsky has done lots of research on linguistics and language and has argued that only humans are wired to develop language. Nim learned about 125 signs but didn’t develop what could be termed as language. I wonder though: clearly, chimps have a screeching/grunting language that they use to communicate with each other. How successful will humans be in trying to learn that?
