The world’s tiniest open source violins – XKCD 743.

  2. the world’s tinest open source violin

Inspired by XKCD strip, MaskedRetriever created a model for “the world’s tinest open source violin,” which you can use to offer mock sympathy to people who didn’t listen when you warned them of the dangers of proprietary software and who’ve now been bitten on the ass by it.

It’s the Tiny Open Violin, by Masked Retriever.

It’s neither the smallest nor would it qualify as a violin, though.

I think the smallest “real” violin to date is like a half-inch long.

The phrase “playing the world’s smallest violin” is a sarcastic way of feeling sorry for somebody. XKCD put its own geeky twist on it by declaring said violin to be open-source when someone freaks out to a techie about FB privacy. There are people in this world to whom XKCD is holy gospel and they took it upon themselves to build these tiny violins so they can actually “play the world’s smallest violin”. Obscure but nice question.
