Aim to misbehave failed

A simple question (with a slightly long answer?). Why was this device named so?

Cracked by everybody.

Answer:

Quoting krudebox “NASA held an online contest to name one of the nodes in the ISS, in which Colbert came out top. But they didn’t name the node as Colbert instead named a treadmill following a compromise with Stephen Colbert the comedian.”

COLBERT – Stephen Colbert won an online contest at NASA with write-in votes to name a node of the space station, which NASA then vetoed, so they named a treadmill after him instead.

NASA held an online contest to name a room at the space station. The name “Colbert” beat out NASA’s four suggested options: Serenity, Legacy, Earthrise and Venture.
NASA chose to go with Tranquility instead.

NASA and Colbert compromised by naming a treadmill used for exercising in space after Colbert.

Hence, Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT).

hahaha, answer’s in the question – colbert.

    after stephen colbert.

it’s named after him because he won in a poll for the new space station, but NASA didn’t agree, and gave him this instead

Because NASA always has the last say on things like this. Why they ultimately went with the eighth most popular name though, has lots of folks thinking that the ISS Node 3 naming effort was a total farce and not just a referendum on Colbert and his fans.

The ISS module was named Tranquility beating Colbert (after Stephen Colbert) which was more popular. So NASA named the treadmill was named Colbert.

Accd to the *humour* mills, NASA offered to name their urine recycler Toilet Environmental Waste Accumulator/Recycling Thingy. Jon Stewart declined the honour.

    [WARNING: Wikipedia copy-paste ahead]

The name for the treadmill (COLBERT) came about due to a naming contest that NASA held for what became the Tranquility module of the ISS.

Comedian and TV personality Stephen Colbert used his show The Colbert Report to encourage his viewers to write in votes to use “Colbert” during the contest. After the results of the contest were announced, NASA decided to use Colbert’s name for the new treadmill in place of naming the Tranquility module in his name.

  10. nasa selected the treadmill name as ‘colbert’,after
comedian stephen colbert took interest in nasa’s online node3 naming poll & urged his viewers to submit the name’colbert’.although nasa ended up choosing the suggested name tranquility for the node, the agency designated its new treadmill, the name ‘colbert’,in honour of the name that received the most entries.

The Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill, or COLBERT, is expected to keep astronauts in shape. It is named after the comedian Stephen Colbert.

With the help of a legion of fans, Colbert got the most votes in the space agency’s online poll soliciting names for Node 3, which will be called Tranquility after the Sea of Tranquility, where Apollo 11 landed on the moon.

NASA had run a write-in voting contest to name Node3. The most voted answer was Colbert after Stephen Colbert. But as per NASA’s policy to not name hardware after living things, they named this treadmill COLBERT

    Colbert.

That wasn’t so long now, was it? :D

(P.S: In case you decide to be anal about it, he got his audiences to vote for a space module to be named Colbert but in spite of winning it, NASA denied him the honour but to make up for it they named this one after him, yada yada yada.)

Treadmill built for NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, which engineers had called simply T-2
for more than two years is suddenly famous as the Combined Operational Load-Bearing External Resistance Treadmill, or COLBERT.

NASA selected the treadmill’s name after comedian and
host Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” took interest during the Node 3 naming census and urged his followers to post the name “Colbert,” which received the most entries.

    quoted text:
Stephen Colbert caught NASA’s eye when he seized upon the agency’s “Name the Module” contest and got his fans to submit his name as a write-in candidate. NASA handled the potential public relations nightmare with finesse, dispatching an astronaut and later the head of its human space flight program to Colbert’s show as guests and offering up a namesake treadmill to appease the comedian’s fans. (And in a rare poke of self-deprecating humor, NASA acknowledged its fetish for acronyms by officially naming the treadmill the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill, or COLBERT for short.)

COLBERT for Combined Operational Load-Bearing External Resistance Treadmill or from the Comedy Central guy Stephen Colbert. This is the treadmill used by astronauts to exercise.

In early 2009 NASA held an online poll to name what became the Tranquility module. On the 3 March 2009, episode of The Colbert Report, host Stephen Colbert instructed his viewers to suggest “Colbert” as the name for Node 3 in the online poll. On 23 March 2009, it was announced that “Colbert” had garnered the most votes, but NASA did not immediately commit to using the name.

Congressman Chaka Fattah had pledged to use congressional power to ensure that democratic voting is honored in outer space as well as on planet Earth, in response to the possibility that NASA would overrule the voting. On the 14 April 2009 episode of The Colbert Report, astronaut Sunita Williams appeared on the show to announce that NASA decided to name the node 3 “Tranquility”, the eighth most popular response in the census, and announced that they would name a new treadmill on the station after the comedian – Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill (COLBERT). Colbert was invited to Houston to test the treadmill, and later to Florida for its launch. The treadmill was taken to the ISS in August 2009, aboard STS-128[10] and will be installed in the Tranquility module after the node arrives at the station in February 2010.
