Answer:

Gus Grissom(1), the NASA astronaut, was on a mission named The Liberty Bell(3) 7, which almost sank. So, as a tongue in cheek reference to this, he named one of his next missions “Molly Brown”, after the lady on the Titanic (2).

Gus Grissom, the “unsinkable” Molly brown and the Liberty Bell. Grissom’s Mercury space mission aboard a vessel named Liberty Bell nearly ended in disaster when he almost drowned upon splashdown. But he survived and his next mission’s craft was humourously named Molly Brown. Nice question.

Easiest to just do a wikipaste:
“In a playful reference to the Broadway hit The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Grissom nicknamed the Gemini 3 spacecraft Molly Brown hoping that it would not duplicate his experience with Liberty Bell 7, the Mercury mission that saw Grissom’s capsule sink after reentry.”

The Mercury-Redstone4 in which Grissom travelled was named Liberty Bell 7. It sunk during the splash-down. Referring to this, Grissom named the first Gemini capsule Molly Brown after Margaret Brown of the Titanic fame [one of the few survivors and known as the Unsinkable Molly Brown].

Gus Grissom, Margaret Brown (played by Kathy Bates in the James Cameron version of Titanic), Liberty Bell.

Grissom’s Gemini 3 mission was nicknamed Molly Brown as a nod to his earlier near-drowning in a Mercury capsule. The reference was to Kathy Bates forcing lifeboats to return to the Titanic to look for survivors.

So he named his next craft after Molly Brown from the Broadway show – The Unsinkable Molly Brown. NASA did not like it, so he called it The Titanic. Eventually, it was nicknamed the Molly Brown.
