Answer:

In 2006, Jimbo Wales claimed some 500 people have written most of Wikipedia. Aaron Swartz, one of Reddit’s early employees ran some scripts and showed the opposite. Lots of people write wikipedia, only a few edit and maintain it.

    Jimmy Wales [pic 1] claimed that most of the edits and content on wikipedia came from a small community of dedicated users, around 500 in number.
    Aaron Schwartz [pic 2] was not convinced. He ran tests measuring the actual textual material contributed and found that Wales’ claim was faulty and in fact most of the content came from general public and not the close-knit community as had been claimed.

    Aaron Swartz,famous for “Who Writes Wikipedia”,an article examining the contributions to Wikipedia articles written during his candidacy for the Wikimedia Foundation board election in 2006.
    Jimmy Wales’ controversial claims were,”The bulk of Wikipedia is written by 1400 obsessed freaks who do little else but contribute to the site”

    Jimbo Wales (1) claimed in all his lectures that Wikipedia was the combined work of only 500-1000 contributors.

    Aaron Swartz (2) did the actual research and found that the truth is just the opposite. Those “Core” people contribute almost no NEW content, proving that, good or bad, Wikipedia really is the people’s encyclopedia.

    ” Who writes wikipedia?” controversy…
    Jimmy Wales once argued that only “a community … a dedicated group of a few hundred volunteers” makes the bulk of contributions to Wikipedia and that the project is therefore “much like any traditional organization.” Wales performed a study finding that over 50% of all the edits are done by just 0.7% of the users (at the time: 524 people). This method of evaluating contributions was later disputed by Aaron Swartz, who noted that several articles he sampled had large portions of their content (measured by number of characters) contributed by users with low edit counts

    Jimmy Wales claimed that around 500 people most of whom he knew made 50% of Wikipedia’s contributions. Aaron Swartz heard this while at Stanford and decided to check out the claim. What he found was that most contributions came from sporadic users and the aforementioned 500 mainly dealt with formatting etc. He wrote the famous essay “Who writes Wikipedia?” and also ran for the board of Wikimedia.

    Jimmy Wales claimed that wikipedia was being written/edited by a community of 1000 to 2000 ppl. Aaron Swartz published an aricle “Who writes Wikipedia” to dismiss the claim.

    Jimmy Wales & Aaron Swartz.

    2 is “aaron shwartz” and 1 is Jimmy Wales..

    Wales made statements, Wikipedia was actually written by “a community … a dedicated group of a few hundred volunteers”, and not thousands and thousands of individual users each adding a little bit of content..

    Aaron shwartz, rebuked by stating “insiders account for the vast majority of the edits. But it’s the outsiders who provide nearly all of the content”. He even provided statistical proof by choosing an article.

  17. 1 => Jimmy Wales
    2 => Aaron Swartz
    Wales claimed that a small percentage of contributors were responsible for 80% of the content on Wikipedia. Swartz disproved that by finding that the small percentage of active users were only formatting information rather than adding to it.

    Jimmy Wales, ‘co-founder’ of Wikipedia claimed that Wikipedia was actually written only by “a community … a dedicated group of a few hundred volunteers”.

    Aaron Swartz, wrote an article ‘Who Writes Wikipedia’, in which he proved him wrong.
