Who’s epitaph?

Pseudo-bonus points for pointing out the well-known screwup in this.

Cracked by everyone!

Answer:

Jakob Bernoulli, of the Bernoulli Spiral fame. Sadly enough they ended up putting an Archimedean spiral on his epitaph.

Jakob Bernoulli and the logarithmic spiral. He was fascinated by the curve’s special property that zooming into it is equivalent to rotating the curve. He wanted the spiral to be inscribed in his epitaph but by mistake an Archimedean spiral which doesn’t share its logarithmic counterpart’s self-similarity was placed instead.

It has an Archimedean spiral instead of a logarithmic spiral that he wanted.

Jacob Bernoulli’s tomb. The mistake is that the spiral at the bottom isn’t a logarithmic spiral.

    Jacob Bernoulli.

The error is that the stone mason put a simple arithmetic (Archimedean) spiral on the marker instead of a marvelous (logarithmic) spiral.

Jacob Bernoulli, he wanted to have a logarithmic spiral, but the stone masons made it a Archimedes spiral.

    JAcob Bernoulli’s gravestone.
Bernoulli chose a figure of a logarithmic spiral and the motto Eadem mutata resurgo (“Changed and yet the same, I rise again”) for his gravestone; the spiral executed by the stonemasons was, however, an Archimedean spiral. [1] “[Jacques Bernoulli] wrote that the logarithmic spiral ‘may be used as a symbol, either of fortitude and constancy in adversity, or of the human body, which after all its changes, even after death, will be restored to its exact and perfect self’.”

Jacob Bernoulli’s epitaph. He actually wanted a logarithmic spiral engraved on his headstone but, by error, an Archimedean spiral was placed there instead.

Jacob Bernoulli, what was supposed to be a logarithmic spiral was carved as an Archimedean spiral.

Epitaph of “Jacob Bernoulli” – a prominent mathematician. Considered the first person to develop the technique for solving separable differential equations.

    The screw-up was : Bernoulli chose a figure of a logarithmic spiral and the motto Eadem mutata resurgo (“Changed and yet the same, I rise again”) for his gravestone;
the spiral executed by the stonemasons was, however, an Archimedean spiral.

Jacob Bernoulli’s. “Bernoulli called the logarithmic spiral Spira mirabilis, “the marvelous spiral”, and wanted one engraved on his headstone. Unfortunately, an Archimedean spiral was placed there instead” – from Wikiquote.

    Jacob Bernoulli’s epitaph.
At the bottom what we see is Archimedean spiral, whereas the intention was to engrave a logarithmic spiral.

  34. Xanda

    Epitaph of Jacob Bernoulli.

The spiral at the bottom is an Archimedian spiral rather than a logarithmic spiral as Bernoulli would’ve liked.
