Seraph is a CHAP (Challenge-handshake authentication protocol), captchas both authenticate users (although I guess a captcha checks whether someone is human – guess you can call that authentication too).

Captchas belong to a broad class of problems called ‘Challenge response authentication’, where the user is posed with a crypto/ non-crypto task and has to figure out the solution to be authenticated.
