Slightly Modified version of a guest question sent in by Dhruva Batni.

He is the first recipient of the GQHero trophy! Back-end changes for this trophy are in, but it may take while for it to appear on the profile page.

Now for the question
Any short wave radio enthusiast will eventually bump into stations which continuously transmit spooky stuff like this. What are these stations called?

Answer:

Numbers Stations — allegedly, transmissions meant to be decoded by spies.

The last one freaks the hell out of me, because it is speculated that the thing is an uptime notifier for a “Doomsday Machine”! Holy *beep*!

@Rogi: It is just to hint that the question has something to do with cryptography. Most of these stations transmit encrypted data.
