Five-question theme round

Alright folks.

It’s been a while since we deviated from the bog-standard question-a-day format, so here’s something slightly different.

The next five questions form a theme round. i.e., all their answers are connected by a common theme.(e.g, if the five answers were to be Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and Ahmet Ertegun, the theme would be Led Zeppelin).

Point scoring rules:

  1. For answering each question, you get one point, as usual.
  2. If you guess the theme after the first question, you get five additional points. Second question: four points. Third question: three points. Fourth question: two points. Fifth question: one point.
  3. Please post your answer to each question, and the guesses to the theme if any, as separate posts.
  4. One theme attempt per question, only.
  5. Our decisions are final :)

So here’s the first question of the set.

Question 1: Identify the object being demonstrated in this audio clip.

Please note that this set is exhaustive (i.e. these are the only 5 related to this particular theme)

Cracked by Shrey Goyal , Kaiser Soze , Higgers , udupendra , Raghuvansh , Rogi , lordmaldy , krudebox and Johny Walker.

A few attempts, but no-one cracked the theme yet.

Answer:

Quoth Krudebox: “VODER (Voice Operating DEmonstratoR), an electronic speaking instrument, which was unveiled at the New York World’s Fair 1939-40.”

VODER (Voice Operating DEmonstratoR), an electronic speaking instrument, which was unveiled at the New York World’s Fair 1939-40.
