Answer:

Thats the Blink comparator originally used to find Pluto. The same technique is used even now to find new planets/asteroids.

Simple and works :)

  1. Blink comparator.
A blink comparator was a viewing apparatus used by astronomers to find differences between two photographs of the night sky shot using optical telescopes such as astrographs. It permitted rapidly switching from viewing one photograph to viewing the other, \

Blink Comparator :- The apparatus that is used to check between two fotos taken by an astrograph ( astro camera) at different times just to check movement of space bodies….

This technique was later used in Hinmann Collator to check the exact composition order of the folios of Shakespeare….

Pluto fetish! Blink comparator, originally used to compare photographs taken across time intervals through astronomical telescopes. One of these helped find Pluto.

P.S. The full-size version of the first image clearly shows the title of the placard at the bottom left – “Discovery of the planet Pluto” :D

    De-speckle(r) ?

  5. shouldn’t have posted this question so close to the pluto question :P
A blink comparator, quickly switches between two images to detect large proper motion, such as planetary orbits.
    The pic’s Pluto again.

The Blink Comparator, used by Clyde Tombaugh for figuring out the existence of Pluto.

Basically an image differencing apparatus. Used in All sorts of fields.

Thanks to the previous Pluto question,I saw this then in the same article. Wouldn’t have figured this out at all otherwise :)

That\’s the Blink Comparator (The device that found Pluto). It works by taking two pictures of the exact same celestial location and looking for changes between the two, thereby allowing movement of planets asteroids and other objects to be perceived just like in a movie.
