The Napoleon Dynamite Problem. Researchers and algorithm workers at Netflix have found that they are unable to predict whether or not a particular viewer will like Napoleon Dynamite (1) based on their ratings of previously viewed films. There are only a select few movies that pose this problem, like I Heart Huckabees (2) and Sideways (3).

Napoleon Dynamite, I Heart Huckabees and Sideways.

Some of the movies that are proving practically impossible for automated algorithms to predict whether people will like them or not, throwing a spanner in the works of online recommendation engines, such as that of Netflix.

Netflix, has a system that analyzes user ratings and rental history to recommend other movies to their subscribers. Netflix is offering a $1 million prize to anyone who can improve its accuracy by a factor of 10%.
But oddball movies like Napolean Dynamite, Sideways are making it difficult for the algorithm to categorize it to one genre. Hence the headache for CS machas.

These are the among the 25 most difficult to predict movies in the NETFLIX 1 milion dollar PRIZE competition where participants were supposed to generate a recomendation engine by anticipating users reacttions to a movie. They find predicting the reaction to napoleon dynamite the hardest

This is the Napoleon Dynamite problem faced by people attempting the Netflix Challenge.
Basically the movie recommendation algorithm picks out mainstream movies with ease, but hits a roadblock when it comes to movies such as “Napoleon Dynamite”,” I Heart Huckabees” etc.
