Images of the spiral galaxy M100 demonstrate the improvement in Hubble images after corrective optics were installed during Servicing Mission 1 in 1993 ;)

before and after Service Mission 1(STS-61) of Hubble Space Telescope

    for instruments added read this:

Pictures of M100 Galactic Nucleus .

The picture beautifully demonstrates that the corrective optics incorporated within the WFPC-2 compensate fully for optical aberration in Hubble’s primary mirror.

Hubble Telescope- the second image was ‘taken with the second generation Wide Field and Planetary Camera (WFPC2), which was installed during the STS-61 Hubble Servicing Mission’.

  9. The Hubble space telescope had a flawed mirror which prevented images from being focused on clearly.
This was corrected by installing the fancy sounding Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement, which was in essence a very expensive pair of specs! And thus the After image.

At least that\’s what i guess it is!

Hubble Space telescope suffered from Spherical Aberration.

    pic1 :Before the correction
pic2 :After the problem was fixed ,for which a shuttle was sent to place a “contact lens” equivalent for the the Hubble.

Hubble Space Telescope images before and after the mirror problem fix?

  16. Sridhar C

Hubble image before a service mission to repair the lenses and the second image is that of the same galaxy after the successful mission

    Hubble space telescope.
There was a problem in the mirror. It wasn’t polished & spaced properly. The images are before and after the polishing.

The first image is the core of the galaxy M100 taken by the Hubble Telescope which had the Wide field Planetary Camera 1, the second one is the same image but taken by the Wide field Planetary Camera 2(WFPC-2), the WFPC-2 contains modified optics that correct Hubble’s blurry vision.
