1. is John Draper who used to ‘Phreak’ i.e like hacking into phone line and for it he used a toy whistle that was, at the time, packaged in boxes of Cap’n Crunch cereal could emit a tone at precisely 2600 hertz—the same frequency that was used by AT&T long lines to indicate that a trunk line was ready and available to route a new call.

Draper was called the Crunchman cos he discovered that the toy whistle that was packaged in boxes of the cereal could be easily modified to emit a tone at precisely 2600 hertz, the same frequency that was used by AT&T long lines, thus hacking them.

2. is Cap’n Crunch
In early 1971, a Vietnam War veteran named John Draper [1] (later nicknamed Captain Crunch, Crunch or Crunchman) discovered with his friend Joe Engressia that a toy whistle that was, at the time, packaged in boxes of the cereal [Captain Crunch, 2] could be easily modified to emit a tone at precisely 2600 hertz, the same frequency that was used by AT&T long lines to indicate that a trunk line was ready and available to route a new call. This would effectively disconnect one end of the trunk, allowing the still-connected side to enter an operator mode. This resulted in, among other things, the ability to place free phone calls to anywhere in the world and operator-like control over the phone system. Experimenting with this whistle inspired Draper to build blue boxes, electronic devices capable of reproducing this 2600 Hz tone. He was sentenced in October 1971 to five years’ probation for toll fraud.
didn’t you guys ask this earlier?

2. Captain Crunch
2600 hertz whistle
He used the Cap’n Crunch(Pic 2) toy whistles to produce the same frequency as that of AT&T’s long distance calls, thereby resluting in the creation of the Blue Boxes.
and the cartoon is the mascot of a breakfast cereal Cap\’n crunch
John Draper used toy whistle(packaged in boxes of Cap\’n Crunch) for making free phone calls.
John Draper is also called Captain Crunch
To knw how he did it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Draper
He used the Captain Crunch whilstle for Phreaking.
Captain crunch came with a Whistle that could produce a frequency of 2600Hz, which was the same frequency as AT&T long distance lines. So Draper used it to phreak those lines.
I had asked same question with different visuals in a quiz last year :D
