Answer
John Conway (1) created his Game Of Life. He guessed that there would be patterns created in the game that were finite patterns that would grow infinitely, but couldn’t figure them out. He offered a 50$ award for anyone who could find one.
Bill Gosper (2) led a team of MIT hackers who figured out the Gosper Glider gun (3), and won the prize.

From Wiki:
Conway conjectured on the existence of infinitely growing patterns, and offered a reward for an example. Gosper was the first to find such a pattern (specifically, the Glider gun), and won the prize.
