The spacecraft developed by the ESA to fly and study the Halley’s comet in 1986 was named after artist Giotto di Bondone, who had used the appearance of Comet Halley in 1301 as the model for the Star of Bethlehem in his 1304 painting titled ‘Adoration of the Magi’

1.Giotto satellite – European robotic spacecraft mission from the European Space Agency, intended to fly by and study HalleyC is named after Giotto (duh!?!)
2.Halley\’s Comet – Giotto had observed HalleyC in 1301 and was inspired to depict it as the star of Bethlehem in his painting Adoration of the Magi. The Giotto satellite came close to the HalleyC\’s nucleus.
3.Adoration of the Magi painting by Giotto, shows HalleyC whizzing past.

the first image is that of the giotto probe comissioned by the ESA for the study of halley’s comet
the second image is a visual of the halley’s comet as seen by the giotto probe
the third visual is the adoration of the magi by giotto!

I guess 2. is a photograph of Halley’s comet?
or maybe there is a sinister twist to the question which I do not get.

Giotto probe, Nucleus of Haley’s comet as captured by the Giotto probe, the painting ‘Adoration of the Magi’ by Giotto which shows the Haley comet in the background famously thus leading the 1986 probe to be named Giotto.

As a tribute to the Italian artist Giotto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giotto_di_Bondone), whose “Adoration of the Magi” was one of the first to feature the “Haley’s comet”, depicted as the Star of Bethlehem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_of_Bethlehem), the space probe sent up to inspect and photograph the Haley’s comet was named the “Giotto” (http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/giotto.html)

Painting by Italian painter Giotto di Bondone depicts the three magi. It also shows Halley’s Comet that was visible around that time and also could have given rise to the belief of a bright start.

The European space probe that studied Haley’s comet in 1986 was named Giotto.
