The first Google doodle was put up when the Burning Man festival took place in 1999. Google founders put it up to say that hey were going off to the event and will not be available for support if their servers go down :)

1) was changed to a doodle for the first time in 1999. The first Google Doodle was a reference to the Burning Man Festival of 1999. The doodle was designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to notify users of their absence ( they were busy attending the festival) in case the servers crashed.Thats how the tradition of Google Doodles started.
