Something’s weird…

This graph depicts a concept that has many researchers a bit worried, though some call it pseudo-science. What concept?

Some of the things below have been cited as data points for this graph… Pseudo-bonus points for identifying them.

Answer: The “Uncanny valley“. The images are some typical examples

1) Aki Ross, from Final Fantasy: TheĀ  Spirits Within. The movie was a major flop, though it had a very interesting story and was animated well. Some attribute it to the fact that the characters were “almost realistic”, making it sit deep in uncanny valley.
2) Arnie’s wax model at Madame Tussaud’s. The wax-models there typically have this same issue.
3) Dr. Hiroshi Ishiguro (right) and his robotic double (left). The same “something’s weird” feeling persists about the robot model.

  1. Poornima Says:

Mori, a robot designer came up with this concept. The relation between human likeness and perceived familiarity:familiarity increases with human likeness until a point is reached at which subtle differences in appearance and behavior create an unnerving effect called the uncanny valley.

  2. madhur Says:

    Uncanny Valley

    …Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dr. Hiroshi Ishiguro

    madhur
  3. shenoyvarun86 Says:

The Uncanny Valley by Masahiro Mori
One picture is that of Terminator, rest no idea,so assume a Pseudo Answer:P:P

  4. duriel Says:

haha…. i always thought i was crazy to have known something like the uncanny valley… i see i am not alone :)

Anyway, Answer: The graph depicts the Uncanny Valley. It measures emotional response of people to humanoid characters (robots/animation stuff like that)

The idea is that as characters look more lifelike, we become more sensitive to their un-human qualities. so, while tintin might be a believable, Aki ross has a “weird mouth tip” :)

    anyway, the pseudo bonus questions:
Aki Ross, from Final Fantasy: The Spirits within ,
    Terminator, Conan The Barbarian,
The last 2 are wax version + actual human (some guy)

If you haven’t yet seen the Heavy Rain Demo, see it.

  5. duriel Says:

ah, the 3rd pseudo bonus answer is “Dr. Ishiguro and his double, not necessarily in that order :)”, and its a bot, not a wax thing.

  6. Dibyo Says:

The concept is called ‘Uncanny Valley’.

    IDs
    - Aki Ross from Final Fantasy
    - Arnie in Terminator?
    - Hiroshi Ishiguro & Geminoid

  7. Ganesh Prasad Says:

    Uncanny Valley

  8. Tathagata Chatterjee Says:

    Uncanny Valley.

Identified “things” : Lara Croft ( Virtual woman), Terminator 1/2, Conan the Barbarian etc

    Regards,
    Tathagata Chatterjee

  9. udupendra Says:

This would be Mori’s Uncanny Valley hypothesis

    udupendra
  10. BiGFooT Says:

The Uncanny Valley hypothesis , as proposed by Masahiro Mori , has roboticists worried about the nature of emotional responses shown by humans during their interactions with robots.

    Datapoints are : Final Fantasy(CGI interaction), Arnie`s T2 - Terminator and
the Geminoid HI-1 robot modelled after Hiroshi Ishiguro

Another common thread is that they are all “Actroids” or artificial actors

  11. Vinod P.V Says:

Uncanny Valley - hypothesis about robotics concerning the emotional response of humans to robots and other non-human entities.

  12. prasanth Says:

The uncanny valley or valley of familiarit

    lady in final fantasy
arnold Schwarzenegger as senator, terminator and mythical hero from red sonja

    two weird chinese guys? who?

  13. shivathilak Says:

The concept of “uncanny valley” where robots begin to resemble humans until a point where they are so close that it is well creepy and the curve dips indicating that familiarity with human beings is lost.

first pic- rendering of the chick in final fantasy, where the uncanny valley syndrome is attributed to have alienated the audience because the rendering was so close hence making it a boz office failure

second pic- arnold schwarzenegger as terminator was predicted to flop cause of the uncanny valley syndrome but didnt.

    third pic- dunno.

  14. yaksha Says:

    the uncanny valley.

The uncanny valley is a hypothesis about robotics concerning the emotional response of humans to robots and other non-human entities

    3>Dr. Ishiguro and his double.

    yaksha
  15. rajeshvj Says:

    The concept of “Uncanny valley”.

  16. akhi Says:

    “uncanny valley”.

first pic : final fantasy ?
    second : hey that’s mr.terminator :D
the third pic : Dr.Ishiguro and his robotic double geminoid.

  17. varuns88 Says:
