Answer: This image of two Marvin-the-Martians was etched onto the image sensor onboard the Spirit and Opportunity mars Rovers. what makes it special is that this is what is called “chip art”. Many details all over teh intarwebs to understand what makes this so special.

Marvin the Martian chip art on an image sensor aboard the Spirit/Opportunity rovers that went to Mars.

Viewed under Darkfield illumination, the title of the silicon artwork is the “Dueling Marvin the Martians”

Etched on the surface of an image sensor used by the Spirit and Opportunity rovers sent to probe the Red planet.

Mark Wadsworth designed the image sensor for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory along with Tom Elliot, who actually did the testing of the flight candidate imagers to select the 20 or so that actually made it on the two missions.

  3. Poornima

Silicon artwork etched on the surface of image sensor used by the Spirit and Opportunity, the Mars rovers

    Etched on a CCD(charge-coupled device).

Used in the Spirit and Oppurtunity Mars Rovers sent to probe Mars.

etched on Si image sensors used by spirit and pathfinder rovers sent to mars.

Designer Mark Wadsworth etched “Dueling Marvin the Martians” into the surface of the image sensor used by the NASA Spirit/Discovery Mars Rovers (silicon based CCDs). Tom Elliot was the engineer that determined which of the “flight candidate” chips would make it on the mission. Apparently he and Mark frequently argued, leading Mark to design the cartoon.

I HAD to give entire story, too many questions!

Images of Marvin the Martian , secretly etched into the Mars rovers’ image-sensor chips.
Appearing as an opposed duet of helmeted gladiators, these angry silicon soldiers were discovered on the surface of an image sensor used by the Spirit and Opportunity rovers sent to probe the Red planet.

Image Sensory chips (Silicon) on Rovers sent to Mars, Spirit & Opportunity

A doodle etched on Silicon, designed by Mark Wadsworth and Tom Elliott,it was used in a image sensor for NASA’s JPL.These were supposedly used on the rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

  10. it was etched on a silicon (image sensor)

found on the surface of an image sensor used by the Spirit and Opportunity rovers sent to probe mars.

  11. nishansolo

It is etched onto the camera chips of NASA rovers, which were sent to Mars(Spirit and Opportunity).

The microchip graffiti features Marvin the Martian. They appear staring at each other, to signify the heated discussions Mark and Tom had at JP Labs-Pasadena, while designing the sophisticated silicon eyeballs for the multitude of cameras that the two rovers were carrying.

Micheal Davidson recognised these microchip graffiti’s and had hunted down various other works of chip art. Davidson’s online gallery of chip art (microscope.fsu.edu/creatures/) is the most extensive collection of microchip art.

The image: “Dueling Marvin the Martians”

Medium: Silicon (on the Image Sensors used by Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers)

Mark Wadsworth designed the image sensor for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory along with Tom Elliot.

  16. it was etched into the Mars rovers’ image-sensor chips (Spirit and Opportunity … )

  17. BiGFooT

Chip art – in this case showing Marvin the Martian , etched on the imaging chips that are used on board the Martian rovers – Spirit & Opportunity
