Answer:

1 is Andrew S Tanenbaum. 2 is Linus Torvalds.

All hell broke loose when 1 started a thread on comp.os.minix with a subject title “Linux is Obsolete”.

    The Tanenbaum-Torvalds debate is a debate between Andrew S. Tanenbaum(pic 1) and Linus Torvalds(pic 2), regarding Linux and kernel architecture in general. Tanenbaum began the debate in 1992 on the Usenet discussion group comp.os.minix,[1] arguing that microkernels are superior to monolithic kernels and therefore Linux was, even in 1992, obsolete.
