The programming language in the pic below has been used to write code that runs Space Shuttles.

Not too big a deal in itself, but what makes it interesting is the name of this language. What is it called?

Here’s a clue:

Answer: The language is called HAL/S.

Ironically (and supposedly coincidentally) enough,  it is also the name of the HAL9000 shipboard AI from 2001: A Space Odyssey, which almost killed all its crew members…

HAL/S was a PL/1 derivative designed to run on IBM AP-101s (also, IBM is a one-letter shift from HAL).

The title contains the “famous last words” of the HAL from 2001

HAL/S – though the HAL comes not from 2001: A Space Odyssey, but from Halcombe Laning of MIT.

HIGH ORDER ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE or HAL/S

i dunno thats my best bet, but space shuttles were coded with anything from c to python and all that…

    Programming language one

  11. Shreyas

    The language is HAL/S
What is interesting is that the name has nothing to do with the HAL 9000 of Space Odyssey fame.

  12. bs

From your clues, I’d guess HAL.

HAL/S, inspired by 2001, I guess… IBM gives it away.
