Answer:

Like all of you guessed,

Hawking’s famous quote- “When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my gun.”

It’s a variation on a line from Hanns Johst’s play Schlageter: “Whenever I hear of culture… I release the safety-catch of my Browning!”.

    Theme: Types of bugs, dammit!

  3. nishas thambi

“When I hear the word Culture, I reach for my gun”… Stephen Hawking substituted Schrodinger’s cat for Culture.

  4. deepak

“When I hear of Schrodinger’s cat, I reach for my pistol”.Stephen Hawking’s adaptation of a line in one of Hanns Johst the Nazi Poet Laureate’s plays.

    1. Stephen Hawking
    2. Hans Josht

Hawking made a statement, “When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my pistol.” This was a deliberately ironic paraphrase of “Whenever I hear the word culture… I release the safety-catch of my Browning”, from the play Schlageter by Nazi Poet Laureate, Hans Johst.

    Schroedinger’s cat …

  11. shivathilak

the second guy is Hanns Johst, whose most famous line was “when I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun”, and Stephen Hawkings’ (the first guy) adaptation of the line was
“When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my pistol”

  12. iamniks

Physicist Stephen Hawking(pic 1) once said, “When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my gun,” paraphrasing German playwright and Nazi Poet Laureate Hanns Johst’s(pic2) famous phrase “Wenn ich ‘Kultur’ höre, entsichere ich meinen Browning!” (“When I hear the word ‘culture’, I release the safety on my Browning,” often paraphrased as something like, “When I hear the word ‘culture,’ I reach for my gun.”)

  13. shivathilak

    Theme:
Something to do with nazi germany and scientists who moved or relocated because of the war.

  14. Gammafunction

    connect being the quote:
“When I hear of ______, I reach for my gun”

    1. substituted Schrödinger’s cat
    2. substituted culture

  15. alephnull

“When I hear of Schrödinger’s Cat, I reach for my pistol”. Hans Johst made the original statement which has been adapted by many, including Stephen Hawking.

  16. alephnull

One last try for the theme: Uncertainty principle.

    1.Stephen Hawking
    2.Hanns Johst

Hawking is known for his wit; he is famous for his oft-made statement, “When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my pistol.” This was a deliberately ironic paraphrase of “Whenever I hear the word culture… I release the safety-catch of my Browning”, from the play Schlageter (Act 1, Scene 1) by German playwright and Nazi Poet Laureate, Hanns Johst.

  20. Ganesh Prasad

    Theme : Quantum mechanics

  21. Tathagata Chatterjee
    1

The Nazi Poet Laureate is Hanns Johst.
The connection is : Schrodinger’s Cat.
The case of quotations attributed to both.

  23. WikiWaki

    Theme- Software Bugs?

  24. Shakeel

The connect is one of the famous lines used in the play Schlageter, written by Hanns Johst ,which goes something like… “when I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun”.
Hawking sometimes uses this as “When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my pistol”.

  25. Mahesh

Stephen Hawking [1] said “When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my pistol”, which was mocking a statement from the play, Schlageter, wrote by Hanns Johst [2]

P.S. This was too easy. not in the “boiledbeans league.” (of course, if my answer is correct :) )

  26. Mahesh

Theme: all questions are related to scientists who worked on atomic structure and electron theory.

  27. Shakeel

    Theme:

Quantum Mechanics…with fractals, heisenberg uncertainity princple, bohr model of atom(that started off the study),Schrodingers cat all contributing to the development

  28. shyam

    Pic 1 – Stephen Hawking
    Pic 2 – Hans Johst

Hawking’s line ” When I hear of Schrodinger’s cat, I reach for my pistol” is adapted from Johst’s play Schlageter

The line “when I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun”, often associated with Nazi leaders has also been adapted, for example by Stephen Hawking as “When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my pistol”

    is the theme schrodinger’s cat?

  31. VikraM

    1. Stephen Hawking once said “when I hear of Schroedinger’s cat I reach for my pistol”, referring to Schroedinger’s cat paradox.

    2. This is Hanns Johst, who wrote the original line that inspired the above: “whenever I hear of culture I release the safety hatch of my Browning”

the title gives Schroedinger’s cat paradox away..

  32. shreyas

    Schroedinger’s cat

  33. shreyas

The theme – Unusual software bugs
    Heisenbugs
    Mandelbugs
    Bohrbug
    Schroedinbugs

  34. A Nony Mouse

Connect: Erwin Schrödinger. Hawking said “when I hear of schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my gun” a parody of what Johst, the poet laureate said.

The theme is software bugs named for the way they behave – heisenbugs, bohrbugs, mandelbugs and schrödingerbugs

  35. Hawking is famous for his oft-made statement, “When I hear of Schrödinger’s cat, I reach for my gun.” This was a deliberately ironic paraphrase of the phrase “When I hear the word ‘culture’, I reach for my Browning”, from a play by German playwright and Nazi Poet Laureate, Hanns Johst.
